Yossi Vardi is one of Israel's early entrepreneurs and has co-founded, lead, and participated in building over 60 high-tech companies.

Yossi co-pioneered instant messaging as the founding investor and the former Chairman of Mirabilis Ltd., the creator of the highly popular instant messaging program ICQ now sold to AOL. Yossi Vardi has an extensive government and public career, holding the position of Director General of the Ministry of Energy and Chairman of Israel's National Oil Company and Chairman of the Jerusalem Foundation.

Many of Yossi Vardi's investments have resulting in the company going public such as answers.com, Scopus, Granite, and Lasers with many being acquired. Yossi Vardi sits on the advisory boards of 3i and Amdocs and has served on boards of numerous state and private corporations including Bezeq, Israel Electric, and the Bank of Israel. He has also been an advisor to the CEO's of AOL, Amazon, and Allied Signal.

Yossi Vardi has received many awards, including the Prime Minister of Israel Hi-Tech award for life achievements on two occasions, the Industry prize, the Ramniceanu prize and C-E-O's Entrepreneurs Hall of Fame.

Erel is the founder and managing partner of JVP (Jerusalem Venture Partners). Fifteen years ago Erel set the tone for Israeli venture capital investing by creating a new model that combined a hands-on management approach with international market creation strategies. Under Erel's leadership JVP helped build numerous technology companies that are today global enterprises with traction in Israel, United States, Europe and Asia. Consistently staying ahead of market trends, Erel anticipated the growing impact of media technologies and increased the firm's investments in that area during the past few years.

Currently, Erel focuses on media technologies, combining projects in the fields of animation and gaming that bring together engineers and artists into a new mode of thinking. He also invests in more traditional industries such as communications & networking, and enterprise software. Erel plays a direct role in creating and managing the global investment strategy for the firm and actively participates on the boards of several portfolio companies, including Cyber-Ark, Double Fusion, Magink and Sepaton.

Prior to founding JVP, Erel was the Director of Business Development for the City of Jerusalem under its former Mayor, Teddy Kollek. There he was instrumental in facilitating the arrival of more than 70 technology firms to the city, including Digital, IBM and many others that gave rise to the burgeoning technology community that drives the Israeli economy today. Erel holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Columbia University.

Glenn Yago


 

Glenn Yago - Milken Institute OPENING REMARKS
Glenn Yago is Director of Capital Studies at the Milken Institute. He specializes in financial innovations, financial institutions and capital markets, and has extensively analyzed public policy and its relation to high-yield markets, initial public offerings, industrial and transportation concerns, and public and private sector employment.

In the area of capital access, Yago is creator of the Milken Institute's Capital Access Index, an annual survey that measures access to capital for entrepreneurs across countries, and co-creator of the Opacity Index, a measure of the openness of financial markets around the world, critical factors in determining a nation's economic health. Both indexes are referenced regularly in academic and business venues.

Yago has worked on financial innovations transfer and privatization projects in the Middle East since 1996, primarily in Israel and Jordan, and in cooperation with the Palestinian Authority. His efforts were instrumental in the issuance of the first municipal bond in Israel's history to finance a development project in Tel-Aviv, and in spurring significant legislative amendments to democratize Israel's capital markets.

In the area of environmental finance, Yago's work focuses on developing financial innovations that monetize environmental goods and services. He organized "Financing Our Global Environmental Future," a 2001 conference co-sponsored by the Milken Institute, the U.N. Foundation and The Nature Conservancy; authored Financing Global Environmental Futures: Using Financial Markets and Instruments to Advance Environmental Goals (Milken Institute Policy Brief, 2001); and teaches environmental finance and urban economic development courses at the Tel Aviv University Recanati School of Business Administration. A central component of the 2002 environmental course was a feasibility study for financing restoration of the Yarqon River, an urban waterway that runs through seven municipalities in the most densely populated area of Israel. Yago is also a member of the California State Teachers' Retirement System Clean Technology Advisory Board, breaking new ground in the arena of environmental investing.

Before coming to the Institute, Yago was director of the Center for Capital Studies in New York, which he founded in 1992 to develop insight into the process of capital access and ownership change. He was a faculty member of the City University of New York Graduate Center Ph.D. Program in Economics, and a senior research associate at the Center for the Study of Business Government at Baruch College City University of New York.

Maxwell brings over 15 years of international journalism and entertainment experience with accomplishments including production/direction for the Yorkshire and Southern Independent Television networks in the UK and feature film production for New World Pictures. Yair Landau

Yair Landau is the former Vice Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and President, Sony Pictures Digital. Landau formed Sony Pictures Digital in 1999, bringing together all of Sony Pictures' digital artists and software engineers from Sony Pictures Imageworks, Sony Online Entertainment and Columbia Tristar Interactive into one division.

Landau supervised production of Imageworks' first animated short, THE CHUBB CHUBBS, which won several awards including an Academy Award for Best Short Film (animated) in 2003. Landau has grown Sony Online Entertainment into the worldwide leader in massively multiplayer online gaming building upon EverQuest, the most successful MMO PC game in the United States with Star Wars Galaxies launched in partnership with Lucas Arts in 2003.

Through Sony Pictures Digital, Landau developed the technology and formed the five-studio Movielink partnership, the first major studio Internet movie download service, launched in 2002. Most recently, he reorganized Sony Pictures Digital Networks to focus on emerging mobile entertainment, broadband video delivery and media software.

A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Chicago, Landau earned his MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

David Lonner is co-head of the Motion Picture Department at the William Morris Agency (WMA), which he joined in September 2003.

Lonner represents a wide range of highly successful writers, producers and directors including: J.J. Orna Berry

Dr. Orna Berry has spent over 25 years in science and technology industries, as an academic researcher, entrepreneur, policy maker and most recently, venture capitalist. She chairs the Israel Venture Association, which represents the Israeli venture capital community. Israeli Venture activity, started in the early 1990's with the "Yozma Program", has grown to become the major source of financing for start-up and early stage technology companies. With $10 billion in capital, Israeli VCs have played a major role in making Israel an important global source of innovation.

Orna joined Gemini as a Venture Partner in June 2000. In her role at Gemini, Dr. Berry applies her expertise in the high-tech arena to assist and advise Gemini portfolio companies. She has been an active Board member on a number of Gemini companies and is currently Chairperson of Prime Sense.

Orna is also the outgoing Chief Scientist and Director of the Industrial R&D Administration of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Government of Israel. In this capacity she was responsible for implementing government policy regarding support and encouragement of industrial research and development.

Dr. Berry is a seasoned entrepreneur. In 1993, she co-founded ORNET Data Communication Technologies Ltd. Her duties included raising venture capital, building the company's worldwide infrastructure and managing the sale of ORNET to Siemens in 1995.

Dr. Berry made significant technological contributions to the local area network (LAN) industry. She served as the Chief Scientist of Fibronics, where her design and implementation work became international standards (IEEE 802.1, 802.5). She also served as a senior research engineer in companies such as IBM and UNISYS, and a consultant to Intel. In her academic research she illustrated for the first time how distributed programs can run faster than previously known, opening the way for accelerated processing in network and distributed environments.

Dr Berry received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Southern California and M.A. and B.A. degrees in Statistics and Mathematics from Tel Aviv and Haifa Universities.

From 1990-1998 he was Director of Pediatric Catheterization Unit, Schneider Children's Medical Center in Petah Tiqva. In 1986, he won a Fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology, at the Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston , where he worked as a staff cardiologist.. Dr. Zeevi holds a M.D. degree (Magna Cum Laude) from the Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Israel.

His credentials include over 60 peer-reviewed scientific articles, in addition to various text books and invited papers. He has published reviews and editorials in pediatric cardiology journals, and gave more than 60 presentations at cardiology conferences. His contributions has been acknowledged in 1993, when he received the Liberman prize for significant contribution to the evaluation and treatment of children with congenital heart disease.

As President, North America Operations for cVidya Networks, Eran Wagner is working to develop the company's business in North America including direct sales, channel sales, marketing and new product creation.

Prior to his new role with cVidya, Eran was VP, Portfolio Strategy and Planning, Amdocs Products Group where he was responsible for developing Amdocs' overall product strategy, including portfolio planning, foundational products, product integration, demo capabilities, and the development of targeted solutions. Eran Joined Amdocs in 2004 following the successful acquisition of XACCT Technologies, a company he founded, by Amdocs.

Prior to Amdocs, Eran co-founded in 1997 XACCT Technologies Inc, where he served as the chairman of the Board of Directors and the executive vice president - Technology, responsible for the definition, creation and market introduction of all XACCT products, and for strategic alliances.

Before XACCT, Eran co-founded the Xpert Group in 1993, and served as president and CEO. The Xpert Group specialized in system integration projects for corporate and service providers networking and Internet/intranet environments. The Xpert Group was sold in 2005 to One.

Earlier in his career, Painter leveraged his expertise in direct response marketing and advertising as the innovator behind several well-known successes, including 1-800-DENTISTTM and 1-800-CAR-SEARCHTM. Painter also was founder and CEO of INFOAccessTM, Inc., an electronic classified service. Painter attended the West Point United States Military Academy, where he majored in political science and systems engineering. He was class president, which enabled him to develop a unique leadership style early in his career. Painter also attended the University of California at Berkeley, majoring in economics.

As head of Canaan's Israel operations since 2005, Izhar Shay focuses on building great companies in communications and mobility, software, clean technologies and digital media. He also seeks key investments in medical devices. Izhar led Canaan's investments in LiveU, Efficient Finance, EnStorage and N-trig. Izhar also oversees Canaan's local involvement in other Israeli companies.

With more than 20 years of operational experience as a successful entrepreneur, Izhar was previously Chairman and CEO of V-Secure Technologies, which he grew to a leading position in the intrusion prevention market. The company was acquired by Radware (RDWR) in November 2005. Prior to V-Secure, Izhar was CEO and co-founder of Business Layers, a Canaan portfolio company. Izhar was previously VP of Business Development with international investment firm The BRM Group.

Izhar holds a B.Sc. in Electronics Engineering from the Technion Institute in Haifa, Israel. He was a paratrooper in the Israeli army. He serves on the board of directors of Snunit, a nonprofit organization, specializing in integrating technology and the Internet into Israel's elementary schools. Prior to joining Given Imaging, Ltd. Mr. Shamir served as Corporate Vice President of Eastman Kodak Company and as the President of Eastman Kodak's Transaction and Industrial Solutions Group, which includes several business units, including Kodak Versamark, Inc. (whose operations were previously those of Scitex Digital Printing Inc.) of which Mr. Shamir was President and Chief Executive Officer.

From June 2003 to January 2004, Mr. Shamir served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Scitex Corporation, Ltd. From January 2001 to January 2004, he served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Scitex Digital Printing, having previously served as its Chief Operating Officer since July 2000. Prior thereto, Mr. Shamir was Managing Director and General Manager of Scitex Digital Printing (Asia Pacific) Pte Ltd., from the incorporation of this Singapore-based company in 1994. Guy Hoffman


 

Guy Hoffman - Georgia Institute of Technology / Media Innovation Lab, IDC Herzliyah ISRAEL GOES HOLLYWOOD
Guy is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology (GTCMT). He is also joining the faculty of the Media Innovation Lab at IDC Herzliyah. Prior he was a research associate at MIT.

Hoffman holds a Ph.D. from the MIT Media Lab in the field of Human-Robot Interaction and an M.Sc. in Computer Science from Tel Aviv University. His research investigates practice, anticipation, and joint action between humans and artificial agents, with the aim of designing agents that display more fluent behavior with their human partners. Other research interests include theater and musical performance robots as well as non-anthropomorphic agent design.

Hoffman's robot AUR won the 2007 IEEE International Robot Design Competition; he was animation and software lead on the 2008 World Expo Digital Water Pavilion, one of TIME magazine's "Best Inventions of 2007"; his research has been covered in the international press, including the New York Times, Seuddeutsche Zeitung, and Science; Hoffman has held several senior research and product development positions in the Israeli software technology industry; and his work in animation, data visualization, architecture, theater, and new media art has been internationally published and exhibited.

The GTCMT brings new musical technology ideas to the market, with applied solutions for businesses and consumers. The MILAB invents, prototypes, and researches the future of media & technology.

H. David Nahai is the Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), the largest municipal utility in the United States. In this capacity, Nahai oversees more than 8,500 employees and an annual budget of more than $4.2 billion.

Nahai was nominated as LADWP's general manager and CEO by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and confirmed by the City Council on December 5, 2007. Nahai is widely recognized throughout California as a leading expert in water issues. He served for over 10 years on the state's Regional Water Quality Control Board, safeguarding the quality of surface, ground and coastal waters while covering a jurisdiction of 11 million residents in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

Bob Hinden has been active in the IETF since 1985 and is is the author of thirty-six RFCs. Prior to this he served on the Internet Architecture Board (IAB), was Area Director for Routing in the Internet Engineering Steering group from 1987 to 1994, and chaired the IPv6, Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol, Simple Internet Protocol Plus, IPAE, the IP over ATM, and the Open Routing working groups. Before assuming his post in Los Angeles, Mr. Dayan was selected to prepare a strategic plan on the feasibility of opening negotiations with Syria. Prior to this he served as Chief of Staff to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Livni and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Silvan Shalom. In this position he had intimate involvement in policy formation, decision-making, and implementation. He was also responsible for Ministerial strategy development related to various diplomatic efforts and coordinated policy initiatives between Ministries. Previously he was the Policy Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, where he was responsible for the Minister's work on US, Asia, East Europe, and Middle East affairs. He managed various projects related to Ministerial activities as well as diplomatic initiatives at the United Nations General Assembly.

Mr. Dayan graduated Magna cum Laude from Tel Aviv University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics and History and has done graduate work in Historical Studies. He served in the Israel Defense Forces in a military intelligence capacity.
